Diana Krall's concert was simply awesome - and I can hardly explain how awesome it was! I'm a total jazz lover and we all know Diana Krall is a contemporary Jazz icon. It's soooo good to listen to her! Well, the theatre was really small, for only 500 people, which made it fell like a very intimate concert. The audience was pretty timid, but didn't hesitate applauding after every single song. Diana kind of broke the ice after the second song, when she took a time to talk about her family, her favorite song writers and what makes each song so special. She also declared her love to her children and husband by singing "I've grown accustomed to his face" and the not less beautiful "How deep is the ocean (how high is the sky)". I'd say that it was the most emotional moment of the concert.
The piano sound and the intensity with which she plays the piano, added to her extraordinary voice, gives me goosebumps. I sat in the first row and so I could see every single expression on her face. I was hypnotized, wishing it would not end. Diana spoke about how much she adores Brazil and even sang "Esse seu olhar" in Portuguese (with her lovely thick accent). She did confess that it's very humbling to sing this song in Portuguese for us. We do find her accent very funny, but we do love it so much. There are not many foreign singers willing to learn to sing a song in our language after all. She makes it clear that she loves Bossa Nova and admires many Brazilian musicians such as Sergio Mendes, Joao Gilberto and Tom Jobim.
But my very favorite moment was her performance of "Walk on By", which was different of all previous performances I've ever seen (even compared to her own in "Quiet Nights"). The song started out very slow and became faster at the end. The new arrangement was breathtaking!
She also sang a few songs from her older albuns, such as "Let's face the music and dance" (which is one of my favorites). At the end, she played "Cheek to Cheek" and "Clap your Hands", which gave us a pinch of blues. :-) She did - brilliantly - improvise a lot... and the piano... ah, how I love the piano!
To sum it up a bit: I was already a big fan of hers, but oh my gosh, now I'm an even bigger fan! I hope she returns to Brazil really soon. Well, I hope to be able to watch her play again somewhere... ANY where.
How Deep is the Ocean, How high is the Sky?
This is awesome, dude. Remember we were to see Michael Buble in Charlotte and for some reason (I can't recall why) we didn't. Holy crap, we totally missed out! Wish we had gone, but maybe life will give us more opportunities in the future. See ya! T
